19+ large in-the-ground youth plots and medicine wheel garden
The West Broadway Kid’s Garden was started in 2009 by WBCO, in partnership with Nature Manitoba‘s Bridging The Gap program and a Grade 4/5 class at Mulvey Elementary School. This property is owned by Manitoba Hydro, who has kindly agreed to allow the youth to garden here.
The purpose of this garden is to connect inner city youth to their food, their community and the natural world. This garden has a North-South-East-West circular garden which is planted with endemic and medicinal plants used by First Nations.
The Mulvey students garden the site until the end of June. Drop-In youth programming takes place in July and August, Monday – Friday from 1-3pm.
Special thanks to Neighbourhoods Alive!, EcoAction, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, Manitoba Community Services Council, Canada Summer Jobs and the Urban Green Team for their generous ongoing support!
