Edible Heritage Youth Garden
659 Westminster
19+ large in-the-ground youth plots
The Edible Heritage Youth Garden was started in 2009 by WBDC, in partnership with Nature Manitoba‘s Bridging The Gap program and a Grade 4/5 class at Mulvey Elementary School. This property is owned by Manitoba Hydro, who has kindly agreed to allow the youth to garden here. Two year funding has been generously provided for vegetable and indigenous plants by Evergreen-Walmart’s Green Grant program.
The purpose of this garden is to connect inner city youth to their food, their community and the natural world. This garden has a North-South-East-West circular garden which is planted with endemic and medicinal plants used by First Nations.
Rain barrels are located on each side of the site, one at the St. Demetrios Romanian Orthodox Church and the other at the Westminster Spaw pet salon.
The Mulvey students garden the site until the end of June. Drop-In youth programming takes place in July and August, Monday – Friday from 1-3pm.
Special thanks to Evergreen-Walmart’s Green Grant, Communities 4 Families, Youth in Philanthropy, Canada Summer Jobs and the Urban Green Team for this year’s funding and generous ongoing support!
